Dental Health FAQs in Calgary, AB

Here we will answer questions to commonly asked questions about dental health:

What is the best way to brush your teeth?

Place your brush at a 45-degree angle to your gum line. Bristles should contact both the tooth surface and the gum line. If you use a manual toothbrush, use small circular movements to brush your teeth. Make sure to brush the teeth’ outer, inner, and chewing surfaces. If you use an electric toothbrush, you do not need to rotate your brush in circular motions. Make sure to brush for at least 2 minutes twice a day. You can also floss once or twice daily before brushing.

How can I treat bad breath?

If you have chronic bad breath or halitosis, remember to hydrate. Dry mouth can cause bad breath. Brushing the tongue can also help minimize bacterial buildup in the mouth. If you eat foods that cause bad breath, like garlic or onions, brushing and flossing afterward can help minimize the smell. You may also schedule an appointment for a dental cleaning and a checkup to keep your breath fresh and improve your oral health.

Why do I need fluoride?

Fluoride is a mineral that can improve your oral health. Using toothpaste that contains fluoride and drinking fluoridated water strengthens the tooth enamel and helps against demineralization. Fluoride can also prevent common problems like cavities and tooth decay from affecting the tooth structure.

What are the most common dental problems?

Many patients visit our office for care if they have:

  • Tooth Sensitivity
  • Gum Recession
  • Cavities
  • Bad Breath
  • Bleeding Gums
  • Enamel Erosion

These problems affect the function and comfort of the teeth and gums. Treating these oral health issues can also help increase patients’ confidence in their smiles.

How do I know if I have a dental infection?

Please contact our office if you notice changes in your oral health, like tooth pain, temperature sensitivity, swelling gums, or even pits in the enamel. These symptoms are common signs of tooth decay and cavities. While it is simpler to reverse decay early on with deep cleanings, we may need to perform a root canal to remove an infection from within a tooth. Over time, we may need to extract a permanent tooth as decay progresses. Visiting the dentist regularly and calling a dental professional if you have a dental problem can prevent tooth loss.
