Restorative Dental FAQs in Calgary, AB

Learn more about restorative dentistry with answers to these commonly asked questions from patients:

Can missing teeth cause TMD?

Even one lost tooth can create an uneven bite. Patients with crooked teeth or a misaligned bite are more prone to TMD problems. Uneven bites place more pressure on the jaw joints and muscles. As a result, patients may experience TMD symptoms like teeth clenching and grinding and jaw or tooth pain if they have missing teeth.

How long is the dental implant process?

It can take 5 to 8 months for patients to receive their dental implants or implant-secured restoration. Patients who require bone grafting or treatments to remove decay or infection from the mouth will need time to heal from treatment. Then, we place the implant post which needs to heal and fuse with the jawbone. Finally, we connect the custom dental restoration to the implant abutment.

Can food get stuck underneath a dental crown?

Foods can only get stuck beneath a crown if it does not fit properly. Dr. Chahal and her team can create new replacement crowns if patients damage their old crown or if it becomes loose over time. it is also important to know how to properly clean around a dental crown to prevent gum recession. Receding gums make it easier for bacteria to reach underneath the crown.

What are common dental crown materials?

Dental crowns can be made of porcelain ceramic, gold, titanium, zirconium, or porcelain fused to metal. Traditional metal dental crowns made of gold or titanium do not blend in with the shade of natural teeth. Because of this, we recommend porcelain ceramic or zirconium dental crowns. These types of crowns are not only durable but also look and feel natural.

Can you get dental implants if you already have a removable denture?
