In the past root canal therapy has gotten a bad reputation. However, with today’s technology and developments in restorative dentistry, a root canal procedure is virtually painless and much like getting a routine filling.
We understand that some patients may have had poor experiences in the past or are apprehensive about undergoing root canal treatment. For such patients, we recommend sedation dentistry for your root canal procedure to offer you a comfortable, stress-free experience.
At Foothills Dentistry, we are dedicated to preserving natural tooth structure whenever possible. When a tooth becomes severely decayed to the point where a filling will not suffice, a root canal is necessary and is often the only means to save your tooth. If the disease is allowed to destroy the nerve, the tooth will die.
If your tooth is severely decayed, root canal therapy is often the only alternative to save the tooth and preserve your natural smile.
A root canal removes the decayed or infected part of the tooth to prevent further damage and keep the tooth roots alive to prevent tooth loss. During your root canal procedure, your dentist will completely numb the area to be treated. Once, you are fully numb, Dr. Shruti Chahal will create a tiny opening in the tooth to carefully remove the diseased tissue. Next, your dentist will disinfect the tooth and fill the canals with a dental sealant called gutta percha (a natural form of rubber). Finally your tooth will be fully restored with an onlay or dental crown if needed.
Root canal symptoms may include severe toothache, prolonged sensitivity to hot/cold, tenderness or swelling in the gums, or tooth discoloration. Root canal complications are rare. Your dentist will advise you on what you can do to help ensure your root canal recovery and may prescribe some pain medication if necessary.
